Answering the Questions Founders Ask Most
For many business owners, the first step in considering a transaction is simply understanding what their company is worth and how the process works. Owners often begin with practical questions about valuation, timing, and preparation:
“What is my business worth?”
“How long does a business sale take?”
“How do I prepare my business for sale?”
“When is the best time to sell a business in Texas?”
These signal the beginning of a transition mindset, where clarity around worth and process becomes essential. For many Texas founders, the question has become more pressing as buyers from across the country and abroad compete for Texas companies in nearly every sector. Yet selling a business is never just a financial decision — it’s deeply personal. Many founders quietly ask, “Is my business ready to sell?” or “What will happen to my employees if I move on?” Others wonder, “What’s the best time to sell my business in 2026?” or “How do I plan succession so my family is secure?”
These aren’t just technical questions — they reflect the weight of a life’s work and the responsibility you feel to those who built it with you. Some owners wrestle with how to retire while protecting culture. Others want to know whether a buyer will keep their team in Houston, San Antonio or the Permian Basin, or fear losing control and not receiving full value for what they’ve created.
At William & Wall, we know these decisions carry as much emotion as they do numbers. That’s why, from our Scottsdale office, we sit on the same side of the table as Texas owners — guiding founders through uncertainty, balancing financial outcomes with human impact, and ensuring that when you sell, you feel both confident in the transaction and at peace with the transition.

William & Wall: Texas M&A Spotlight
Texas has solidified its reputation as one of the nation’s most competitive M&A markets, powered by its diverse economy across Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. Deal volume peaked in 2021 with 1,286 transactions valued at $152.3B, reflecting the state’s resilience even amid global uncertainty. After a moderation in 2022 (984 transactions, $92.4B), activity rebounded strongly in 2023 (733 transactions, $188.9B) and 2024 (777 transactions, $206.6B), underscoring Texas’s ability to attract both private equity and strategic acquirers across industries from energy to technology.
Several landmark transactions highlight Texas’s central role in U.S. dealmaking. In energy, Occidental Petroleum (Houston) acquired Anadarko Petroleum in 2019 for $55B, one of the largest oil and gas deals of the past decade. The Kinder Morgan and El Paso Corp. merger in Houston ($38B, 2012) continues to resonate as a defining moment in midstream consolidation. More recently, ExxonMobil (Irving) announced its $60B acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources in 2023, reinforcing Texas as the global capital of energy M&A.
Texas has also become a hub for technology and digital infrastructure. Dell Technologies (Round Rock) completed its $67B acquisition of EMC in 2016, reshaping the global IT landscape. In Austin, Oracle relocated its headquarters in 2020, sparking a surge in private equity-backed software transactions.
Healthcare and consumer markets are equally active. Tenet Healthcare (Dallas) has pursued ongoing divestitures and acquisitions, while Dr. Pepper Snapple (Plano) merged with Keurig Green Mountain in 2018 for $18.7B, creating one of the largest beverage companies in North America. In aviation, American Airlines (Fort Worth) continues to anchor consolidation in the airline industry, while Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has engaged in strategic fleet and network moves to maintain competitiveness.
Recent Texas deals show both layers of the market. In 2025, Constellation Energy acquired Calpine for $29.4B and Turn/River Management took SolarWinds private for $4.4B. In 2026, Martin Marietta agreed to acquire Fort Worth-based Lhoist North America for about $12.8B, KKR agreed to acquire Plano-based Integer Holdings for about $5.9B, and nVent Electric agreed to acquire McKinney-based Maverick Power for $2.3B. Beneath those headlines, private equity stayed busy: 70 of the 227 Texas transactions in the second quarter of 2026 were private equity-backed, including TPG’s majority stake in Dallas-based Learfield Communications.
Taken together, these transactions reinforce Texas’s role as both an energy superpower and a diversified growth hub. From oil and gas in Houston to software in Austin and financial services in Dallas, Texas offers one of the broadest and deepest buyer pools in the country. With record levels of private equity dry powder and strategic acquirers actively reshaping their portfolios, 2026–2027 represents a pivotal moment for Texas founders to evaluate succession, a partial sale, or a strategic sale.
“Business owners often have limited visibility into the universe of potential buyers for their companies. Our goal with these insights is to bring greater transparency to regional M&A activity, highlight where private equity and strategic buyers are deploying capital, and help owners make more informed decisions about their company’s value, timing, and strategic alternatives.”
— Tro Panosian, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, William & Wall
